Origin

To be an ambitioned athlete in a small country is not an easy thing. On one side it is easier to get to the national top level – on the other side there is often not enough competition to make that extra step to the international top level. For this reason, the Games of the Small States of Europe (GSSE) were founded.

Squash was not included in the GSSE but – inspired by this idea – the SRA ‘s of Andorra, Cyprus, Monaco and Luxemburg decided to create a similar event for squash in Cyprus 1989. This was the birth of the European Small Nations Squash Tournament (ESNST).

The second tournament included eight nations and took place in Luxemburg in 1991. At this time, all delegates agreed to host the ESNST annually in the future in order to provide an opportunity for a regular exchange – of both, sportive and social nature. Today -14 years later – the ESNST managed to be included in the GSSE twice and to establish itself as the annual highlight of small nations squash.

The thoughts behind

The thoughts behind the ESNST have stayed the same ever since. Firstly, to provide an opportunity to compete on an international level against players of similar strength and to use the level of competitive Squash in the participating countries. Secondly, and just as important, the ESNST shall be an event where social relationships between people with similar Interests can be established and maintained for a long period of time and across all borders. Many new players have participated in the ESNST in recent years. Therefore – today more than ever – it is important to remember and to maintain these thoughts behind this event. The ESNST shall remain what it is-a very special tournament in a unique sporting and social surrounding
